Renting Your First Apartment: Tips for DC Area Students
Each year hundreds of students from DC area colleges – GW, Georgetown, AU, Howard, GMU – move off campus and into their first apartments. Living on your own can be a great experience. Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for college students renting an apartment for the first time to encounter issues such as disputes with the landlord.
You can help avoid disputes and other problems by understanding what you are committing to when you sign a lease (also called a rental agreement) and familiarizing yourself with the things you should keep your eye out for. Here are some of the keys:
- Inspect the apartment before moving in and use a checklist to document its condition.
- Carefully read your rental agreement and making sure that you fully understand all of its provisions.
- Research your rights as a rental apartment tenant living in Washington DC, Maryland or Virginia.
